Krommer, Spohr. Clarinet Concertos

Sabine Meyer (Clarinet), Julian Bliss (Clarinet)

Release Date: 2nd July 2007
Label: EMI Classics

The breadth of Sabine Meyer’s repertoire is matched by her dedication to collaborations with other great musicians. This recording continues the trend, and sees her working with her student, Julian Bliss.

At the age of 19, Julian is already establishing himself on the international concert scene having already made highly successful debuts at Wigmore Hall, Verbier Festival and the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

Krommer was one of the most successful of the many influential Czech composers in Vienna at the turn of the 18th century. His creative output comprises over 300 works, although he only began to publish them in later years. Tuneful and elegant, the double clarinet concerto is a perfect repertoire choice for teacher and student.

Spohr’s clarinet concertos – of which Nos. 2 and 4 are performed here – strike a fine balance between virtuosity and musical substance, and they represent a major contribution to the development of the clarinet not merely in terms of repertory but also of construction.

Franz Krommer 1759-1831:
1-3 Concerto for two clarinets*+
Louis Spohr 1784-1859:
4-6 Clarinet Concerto No.4 +
7-9 Clarinet Concerto No.2*

Prom at the Palace

Various Artists
Release Date: 1st July 2002
Label: EMI Classics

You didn’t have to be an ardent monarchist to be seriously impressed by the musical celebrations marking the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The classical concert at Buckingham Palace boasted a star line-up, providing not just the predictable classical pops (Gershwin’s “Summertime”, Verdi and Puccini faves, Land of Hope and Glory etc) but the occasional element of adventure. Mstislav Rostropovich’s choice of the passionately introspective Preludio from Villa Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 was nothing if not daring for the occasion, and there was also the chance to hear a real star in the making – the 13-year-old clarinettist Julian Bliss who tackled a cracking virtuoso showpiece by Messager.
